Sample Letter of Condolence: Are Those Letters Still Used?

People do still write letters of condolence. In the event that the spouse, for example, of a close friend dies there comes the need to express sympathy for that person. What often happens is that people don’t know what to say in these circumstances. A sample letter of condolence can help people let their loved ones know they are thinking of them.

The letter of condolence is not necessarily a formal letter if it is being written to someone that has been close to the writer. The sample here is an example of a letter written to just such a person.

I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss [insert name] a great deal.

I have valued [name] friendship more than I can say. I will miss the many times we spent together which were all too few. The memories of [name] will be at the forefront of my mind and in my heart always and they will help me to remember to live life to the fullest as [name] showed us.

[The above is sufficient for a letter of condolence when the writer is close in proximity to the reader. In the event that the writer cannot be with the reader for the funeral services another paragraph should be added.]

There is no place I would rather be than with you in this time of need to help you cope with your loss. But I am available whenever you need to talk to someone. All you have to do is call me [phone number].

I am thinking of you.

When writing the letter of condolence it must not appear to be cold. For this reason it cannot be written on one’s computer. It must also not be sent through email. These will look as if the writer cannot take the time to express his or her feelings in a more appropriate manner which is by writing the letter by hand. It also must not be written on plain white paper or lined paper. Stationery is the best medium for the letter of condolence making sure that the paper and the envelop are matching. If the two are different it will present a tacky appearance and show that the letter writer is awfully careless. The most important thing is, of course, what the writer has to express to the reader, but how the letter is presented is something that needs to be of concern, too.
